Palouse Living

Fall is my favorite season on the Palouse. But it doesn’t last long. Check out some of the best ways to take in fall beauty before it’s too cold.

6 Palouse highlights to check out before the weather turns.

1. Kamiak Butte County Park

Kamiak is one of those spots that reminds you why you live here. The trail isn’t long, but it gives you some of the best views in the Palouse. In the fall, the trees around the base turn gold before you climb to that big open ridge. Go early or later in the day to catch good light and avoid the crowds. It’s close enough for a quick trip but still feels like a real escape.

2. Idlers Rest (Moscow)

Just a few minutes outside Moscow, Idlers Rest is an easy win for a fall walk. The loop is short, quiet, and full of color this time of year. You’ll hear the creek the whole way, and the leaves make that perfect crunch underfoot. Great for little kids or anyone who wants to stretch their legs without driving far. Plus, across the road is a magical cedar grove that feels like something from The Land Before Time.

3. Lawson Gardens (Pullman)

Lawson Gardens is the simplest way to enjoy fall colors without leaving town. The paths are flat and stroller-friendly, and the trees around the pond always put on a show. It’s a good place for an after-work walk, a family photo, or just a few quiet minutes before dinner.

4. U of I Arboretum

The Arboretum might be the best fall color spot in the region. Every direction you look there’s a mix of reds, yellows, and orange reflected off the ponds. You can do the full loop or just wander for a bit — it’s peaceful, easy to access, and looks different every week as the leaves change.

5. University of Idaho Campus

Downtown Moscow gets a lot of attention, but the U of I campus is just as good in the fall. The trees around the Admin Building and the main green go full color, and the walkways are easy for strollers or a quick lunch-break walk. Grab a coffee and make a loop before the weather turns. Last year we captured some amazing family pics around the admin building

6. WSU Campus

WSU has some great spots for color if you know where to look. The area around Thompson Hall and the mall near the library always light up this time of year. It’s a nice walk for a lunch break or after class, and the mix of old buildings and mature trees gives it that classic college-town feel without having to leave Pullman.
